A Life Built Around Learning, Creating, and Helping Others

My journey has taken me from science to accounting, from corporate leadership to the classroom, and from writing novels to launching a new language-learning business.

Professional portrait of Marcel Emerson

More than one title

Marcel Emerson, CPA

For more than two decades, I have built my career around one central idea: knowledge becomes most valuable when it helps someone move forward.

Today, I serve as a financial executive, Certified Public Accountant, college professor, consultant, published author, and entrepreneur. These roles may appear different, but each one reflects the same values—curiosity, discipline, creativity, service, and a commitment to helping people succeed.

My journey

Seven Chapters That Shaped My Work

This visual follows the same order as my story, without using dates or a traditional timeline.

01

Early Years

Growing Up Curious

My earliest interests were broad. I wanted to understand how people, organizations, and systems worked. That curiosity first led me to study biology at the University of Washington, where I developed the discipline to analyze information, solve problems, and keep learning even when the path was not obvious.

02

A New Direction

Becoming an Accountant

My professional path eventually moved from science into business and financial operations. I discovered that accounting was not simply about numbers—it was a way to understand how an organization functions. To deepen that understanding, I earned a Master of Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Information Systems, combining financial strategy with technology, systems, and data-driven decision-making. Over time, I gained experience in commercial real estate, contract management, higher education, nonprofit work, film production, and private-equity portfolio accounting.

03

Professional Milestone

Becoming a CPA

Earning my Maryland CPA license was one of the most meaningful achievements of my career. I returned to the classroom for the accounting coursework needed to qualify, completed the examination process, and strengthened my commitment to accuracy, ethics, professional judgment, and continuous development. Together, my CPA credential and MBA education provide both the technical accounting expertise and broader business perspective that guide my work with organizations and clients.

04

Education

Teaching at Prince George’s Community College

After years of managing accounting operations at PGCC, I began teaching college-level accounting technology courses. I now teach QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Sage 50, and Payroll Accounting. I especially enjoy helping students who feel intimidated by accounting discover that the subject is understandable when it is connected to real business activity.

05

Creative Work

Becoming an Author

Writing gave me a different way to connect with people. Through six published novels, I have explored relationships, ambition, identity, suspense, and the supernatural. Becoming an author taught me patience, creative discipline, and the importance of communicating in a way that makes people feel something.

06

Entrepreneurship

Starting Marc’s Spanish Academy

Living in the Dominican Republic deepened my appreciation for language learning and the challenges adults face when trying to speak with confidence. Marc’s Spanish Academy was created to offer practical online instruction through small classes, individual speaking labs, and continued support between sessions.

07

The Common Thread

Why I Enjoy Helping People

Whether I am helping a company improve financial reporting, guiding a student through an accounting assignment, advising a client, writing a story, or creating a language program, the most rewarding part is helping someone gain clarity and confidence. Education creates opportunity, integrity builds trust, and practical support can change the direction of a person or organization.
